Fate Law¶
A Fictional Law fabricated by genius wizards and still used by many branches,13 later credited to Wizard Fate.39 It governs causality, probability and prophecy, and fate wizards are among the hardest opponents to face.13 Known wielders include Clark, Dionysius Spencer, Dixon, Jie Ming, Alma, Wizard Noren, Wizard Fate and John, the Fourth Seat.16827363943
What is known¶
- Rarity: Fate wizards are one in a hundred among seventh-level geniuses, turning the accidental into the inevitable, and are a strategic resource for major missions.7 Sixth-level masters are wizard civilization's finest geniuses;33 Broadleaf never reached fate knowledge in ten thousand years at the seventh level.26
- Fate trajectories: Every being has a causal and fate trajectory;2 fate is positive or negative, never zero, and zero means a dead object.10 A normal fate is woven of countless threads, and a fate cut at one point marks a fate wizard at work.32 Fate has neither beginning nor end; a visible start marks a singularity.36
- Quantification: An unexpanded plane's fate is 1, a conqueror's should exceed 10, and a Child of Fate draws fortune and lowers the total.8
- Scanning: A seventh-level fate wizard scans a whole plane's fate laws the instant he tears the barrier, precisely and cheat-proof,2 at the cost of a faked death each time.3 The law can show where planes lie,28 but searching a region returns every plane's whole information, enough to hurt an eighth-level wizard,29 with no natural upper limit on the information mobilized.30
- Causal reading: Golden threads of residual causality lead from a corpse back to its instigator; pressed to a head, the law reads information at the causal layer without touching the soul.32 Fate-marked elements can be tracked by their fate lines where no detection spell survives,37 and the links between malice nodes can be followed to a hidden ruin.51
- Borrowing: A fate wizard can borrow momentum from a prominent trajectory without changing its heading,4 owing a backlash of fate and an equivalent exchange.5 Forcibly weaving a wizard's fate is a Tribunal crime.4 Pulling a future moment of research success into the present along the threads of fate likewise leaves the backlash on the intervener.44
- Steering: Stored luck can be burned to force one's fate to a peak;10 fate warns of dangers beyond detection;10 a skilled wizard plucks the strings so a chosen outcome becomes the likeliest fate line;22 fate-anchoring arrays weave an advantageous future hours before battle;16 a region's fate can be severed so no one learns what was taken.34 Under its pull, near-impossible coincidences converge,40 and it shows where to step in a void with no direction.41 Rather than condemning enemies outright, it shifts possibilities so their reasonable-seeming choices lead to ever worse outcomes.48
- Guarding: The most suitable law for a guard whose task is keeping someone alive;45 it reads subtle omens of danger, weaves its threads against danger in advance,46 senses a concealed sneak attack before it begins and points to whoever holds a solution.47
- Mastery: Cutting fate threads requires real mastery, realistically a seventh-level fate wizard.33 Textbooks warn that those who rely entirely on fate end up ruled by it; the unrestrained ones are probably dead.25
- Growth: As a Fictional Law rather than a rule the wizard world really runs on, its golden thread grows astonishingly slowly by ordinary study; pouring near-infinite information into the soul forces it to grow.49 At about ten points it creates no knowledge, only makes inspiration and openings likelier.50
- Theory: Disturbance equations of causal lines, the law-based expression of information entropy, the observational collapse of fate nodes; the standard textbook sells for 120,000 high-level military merits.19
- Countermeasures: A fate pollution ritual injects chaos and anti-logic into the river of fate, disabling fate, prophecy and causality spells;16 a Law Interference Field suppresses the fate, time and causality disciplines;17 polluted fate lines hamper large-scale divination;18 Information Plane natives process interference into garbled code;21 an altar's protection can hide even one's own death trajectory.38
Wielders¶
| Wielder | Since | Expression |
|---|---|---|
| Clark | Ch811 | Fate and causality as his main research direction;1114 has set foot in the law.16 |
| Noren Workshop's seventh-level fate wizard | Ch992 | Plane-wide scans recording contribution points, one faked death per scan.3 |
| Dionysius Spencer | Ch2776 | Seventh-level; peers into fate trajectories;6 excels at fate.1316 |
| Dixon | Ch2997 | Runes containing the laws of fate and space;7 fate quantification;8 as a guard, reads danger omens, adjusts fate lines and senses sneak attacks.454647 |
| The Prophet | Ch66123 | Through a fate-type Strange and physical objects only.23 |
| Jie Ming | Ch72227 | Fate Subsystem;20 warned by a graze on his trajectory;27 thread condensed at about one tenth of one percent;30 Fate Subsystem with the True-False Void-Piercing Pupil;32 combs and severs fate;34 below his spatial and time laws;35 Extreme Learning Program sealed;31 the slowest of his golden threads,49 at about ten points enough to nudge a fate line and find a key node.50 |
| Alma | Ch89136 | Could not foresee her own death under the altar's protection.38 |
| Wizard Noren | Ch89136 | Skilled in the fate discipline.36 |
| Wizard Fate | Ch95339 | Creator; commands a complete system, catching a fate fluctuation the instant a ninth-level creature wakes.3942 |
| John | Ch97743 | The Fourth Seat; drags a future moment of research success into the present and bears the backlash himself.44 |
Interactions¶
- Fictional Law: Fate is a successful Fictional Law,13 not a rule the wizard world really runs on, so it lags all of Jie Ming's other laws.49
- Law of Cause and Effect: Fate wizards touch causality;13 a Causal Confusion spell misdirects curses.15
- Spatial Law and Time Law: Dixon's runes join fate and space;7 a Law Interference Field covers fate, time and causality together;17 Jie Ming's fate mastery trails both.35
- Life Law: The Substitute Death Doll carries an aura of fate and life.12
- Spiritual Qi Law: Jie Ming's mastery of it rises as he builds the Fate Subsystem.20
- Shadow: Combines with Oboros's shadow into a composite barrier.9
